december: ANNUAL HOLIDAY SCHOLARSHIP & AWARDS GALA
Topic: NAHSE-DVC Annual Holiday Scholarship & Awards Gala Date(s): December 11, 2021, 3-6PM Location: Views Venue, Philadelphia, PA Description: Our keynote speaker Dr. Jacquelynn Y. Orr, FACHE, Program Officer for Research, Evaluation, & Learning at The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, spoke about the “emergence” and importance of Social Determinants of Health as a major driver of health status across many communities in our country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) as conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play that affect a wide range of health and quality-of life-risks and outcomes. In recent years the attention to these factors has steadily increased but during the pandemic our nation’s major challenges in this area, particularly for people of color and socioeconomic status, have become critical public health problems. As a focus of the keynote address, we aim to further enhance the collective understanding of attendees and challenge them to join the efforts to change course for our community. In addition to the keynote, for the first time we honored an organization for their efforts to improve health for a vulnerable population in the Delaware Valley community. Founded by a strong, driven collective of #BlackWomen (Tasnaim Sulaiman, Kevana Nixon, and Zakia Williams) this organization is dedicated to offering free therapy to black men and working to remove the stigma around mental health care. Beginning in 2018, this organization has provided over 1500 free therapy sessions and helped turn the tide for a group that traditionally does not seek out these important services. Please visit their website at https://blackmenheal.org/ to learn more! To close the evening we will be awarded scholarships to deserving students to help advance their education in the many areas of healthcare leadership, including two new scholarships offered by our own DVC Executive Board members. |

During this annual summit we aim to help early careerists take steps to prepare and plan for their career paths in healthcare . This aim is executed through the panelist discussion about their different career paths and experiences with administrative fellowships.
